So, am I disappointed by the fact that Miyazaki gave up his recklessly huge hope?
Yes, and no. A writer, or a screenwriter, always has to fight the urge to stop being optimistic and to tell the truth. As a writer sees more of the truth, he or she may realise that optimism alone cannot change the world. Therefore, many writers indeed forsake their optimism in later works. This is not due to their weakness of mind, but to the cruelty of the truth that they have to face.
However, again I raise my pen to defend him. Though his optimism gave way to cruel truth, he still leaves room for a small hope, friendship and life in general. Those are the only positive aspects of life one can have now. One can have a small hope, because it is not sure that there is none. One cannot make any certain predictions, but there still can be hope, since one cannot.
There are many people that view this as nihilism and as a product of conservative thoughts, but I do not. Though hardships and terrible adventures, Nausicaa discovers that all that held her together is falling apart. This, of course, is not optimistic. However, she still talks about living, and living together, even. It is revealed that everything, even Nausicaa herself, was artificial, but still she decides not to change the world back by the technology that had been the ruin of the world. This may seem unreasonable, and to most people, it is. However, it is what she has to do for the future as one can foresee it, for even the process of restoring the world is unnatural, and it can result in unexpected behaviours. The artificial forest, the Large-Bugs, the heroine, the wars:all were unexpected. The heroine must have known this, though it is not clear why she made such a decision. The writer is still telling the truth, and he still is telling the public that one should do what is best for the present and for the future as one can see it.
He himself admitted that his world is getting increasingly smaller. To me, a young optimist, this was a disappointment. However, to the humanity that has to face the dark future, small hope is the only thing that will sustain it. Humans now have to live by a small hope, doing small goods. The truth is cruel-cruel enough to knock a flying little boy down and force him to walk. I sigh and weep, looking at the little boy, now an old man, walking hopefully. However, he will have to live on. Life will go on no matter what, and he, now deprived of his wings and his youth, will again find a hope, however small that might be.
